"Free To Be You / Freak Flag" 2008

The concept of the show "You Are My Freedom" led me to examine what liberated me. I thought of the many different freedoms I was lucky enough to enjoy and of the different symbols and metaphors that I associated with my personal freedom. I concentrated on the 'You' in the title of the show and thought of my wife as that you. When I asked her what she thought of when hearing the title she told me her different associations. The one that struck me was the idea that she felt free to be herself in our relationship, something she never felt to be fully supported previously in her life. I have always been partial to the expression: 'let your freak flag fly'. The meaning being, show the real you, show what makes you different, and above all, don't be ashamed of yourself. I linked the sentiments of my wife with one of my favorite mantras, 'let your freak flag fly', and it manifested with this piece.

Freedom and our freedom to set our own course. Sometimes our choices are limited to one choice or the other, and sometimes we only believe  our choices are limited. Perhaps it's all how we look at it, and that is how we perceive freedom. If you see an indication that you should follow one of two paths, but the indicator is strange, subversive, different, how should you react? Do you trust it; where is it sending you? You must act independently and decide how you will proceed, choose your own course. You might perceive this 'metaphysical road sign' as a threat or as a door to freedom. Your intuition, cunning, trust, etc. will all be part of how you choose, willfully and freely.
